Hi Guys, quick question i need answering:

Is an AMD 64 X2 4200 processor going to be any faster or better than a P4 3.0ghz with no overclocking?

I have a chance at a cheap upgrade just wondering if it'll be worth it at all. Oh and if I go over to the AMD it means I will get SATA for my HDD as opposed to the current crappy ribbon thingy.

Thanks

Of all the people i've talked to on this subject, the vast majority (who aren't fanboys) usually say "AMD for mucho gaming, Intel for work stuff (high usage of photoshop for example, and CAD tools in factories)"

I'm an AMD person myself, I don't use photoshop to it's fullest abilities .. or mine for that matter. I've had intel chips before but they've always been sloppier than the rival AMD chip at the time.

thanks. do you reckon they're pretty much equally matched then? i know Intel dual core cpus generally beat AMD X2 but i'll worry about a full quad-core upgrade one day when i can be bothered*. (Read: can afford it)

thought for £40 its probably worth it if i get 2gb of ram, mobo nVidia 7600 AGP gfx and the cpu in one bundle. shame the mobo don't support PCI-E :(

As far as quad and dual core chips go, the difference is only noticable if you're doing something insanely boring ... if you just game and couldn't give a shit about performance testing, get any dual/quad chip you want. People that say they notice a difference are just plain liars. The only way you'd notice a difference in some of the more detailed games is with different GFX cards, and even then, some of those are pointlessly overpowered for the level of game quality at the moment.

meh.

Also, is £40 as much as you can spend? I'd save my money for a PCI-E set up really.

well it's just some guy at work cleaning out a bit of old kit and originally i had no plans of doing anything to this old heap of shit i attempt to run BF2 on right now. when this guy said he was selling all that for £40 i thought well it might be worth seeing if it's enough of an improvement to get a few more FPS cuz right now my computer is utter gash...

im perfectly happy going with AMD and i'm not doing any heavy rendering in something like photoshop only the odd Vegas movie here and there...

cheers Tilaron

Actually Intels are faster for gaming aswell, but AMDs are extremly much cheaper.... AMD is the way to go! Most bang for the money!

^ This

AMD is cheap, but Intel is the way to go.

DO NOT get a Quad Core for gaming

For the specific question (comparing those two processors), I say go for the upgrade.

Intel is making far better (faster) processors than AMD right now. But, what you're comparing are older ones and that AMD is a good one for the upgrade you're thinking of. I think you'll be happy with the results.
